Precautions, laws, and regulations concerning installation of wet/dry type paint booths

Precautions for installation of paint booths

Paint booth are required to be equipped with a local air exhaust device that protects workers according to the [Ordinance on the Prevention of Organic Solvent Poisoning] of the [Industrial Safety and Health Act] (hereinafter referred to as the [Organic Solvent Ordinance]).
When selecting paint booths, check the following:

  • Product shape— – External dimensions and weight
  • Painting method— – Manual spray / automatic spray
  • Building conditions— – Number of floors/stories, ceiling or beam height, roof height
    – Dimensions and material of the section where ducts can be drawn

●Secure a fresh air inlet.

As spray booths discharge a large volume of air, pay careful attention to air supply.

  • Supplied air volume— Supply sufficient volume of air relative to the exhaust air volume of the spray booth used.
  • Air supply position— Locate the air inlet on the back of the worker and align the air direction with the spray booth.

●Locate the air exhaust duct in an appropriate place.

スAs spray booths discharge a large volume of air, pay careful attention to air supply.

Regarding the exhaust air duct, the exhaust port position and the way of drawing the duct are stipulated by the [Industrial Safety and Health Act].

Locate the exhaust port at a height of 1.5 m or more from the roof in a way such that the exhaust air is released directly toward atmosphere.

In order to minimize pressure loss, avoid bending the duct as much as possible and secure sufficient duct area.

●For the electric capacitance on the primary side, check the electric capacitance and wire width based on the paint booth specifications.

Laws and regulations concerning the installation of paint booths

The installation of a paint booth needs to be notified to the authorities concerned.

●Notification to the Labor Standards Office * The destination of notification may slightly differ depending on local governments.

When employers, who attempt to install, relocate, or modify the main structure of equipment to seal up the emission source of organic solvent vapor, a local exhaust ventilation system, or a general ventilation system as stipulated in Article 5 or 6 of [Organic Solvent Ordinance] or a push-pull type ventilation system (excluding portable type) as stipulated in Article 15 of [Organic Solvent Ordinance], attempt to make notification as stipulated in Article 88-1 of the [Industrial Safety and Health Act], the documents and drawings, etc. describing the following shall be submitted to the local Labor Standards Office Director together with the notification.

  1. Notification of installation, relocation, and change of buildings and machinery, etc. (Form No. 20)
  2. Outline of organic solvent operation
  3. Outline of equipment that becomes an emission source of organic solvent vapor and its drawing
  4. The method of controlling the emission source of organic solvent vapor
  5. For a general ventilation system, the model code, outline of the structure of the main section of the relevant system, and its function
  6. Drawing of the worksite where the organic solvent operation is performed
  7. For a local exhaust ventilation system, the specification document of the local exhaust ventilation system (Form No. 25)
  8. For a push-pull type ventilation system, the specification document of the push-pull type ventilation system (Form No. 26)
